ONE of the key events taking place as part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Global Entrepreneurship Week of celebrations is the launch of its innovative Social Enterprise £1k Pitching Competition aimed at helping businesses develop new ideas.
Global Enterprise Week takes place during 12-16 November with nearly 10m people in 170 countries celebrating through thousands of events, activities and competitions.
This year Derry City and Strabane District Council is taking part and has organised a series of initiatives locally aimed at showcasing entrepreneurship and business innovation.
Announcing details of the Social Enterprise £1k Pitching Competition, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr John Boyle said the Social Enterprise £1k Pitching competition is open to groups and social entrepreneurs across the Council area who are interested in developing a new project idea.
He explained: “The competition is being delivered as part of the Social Enterprise partnership between Derry City and Strabane District Council and Enterprise North West and is aimed at rewarding and encouraging creativity, talent and innovative ideas within social enterprise.
“The Social Enterprise Pitching Competition will assist them in delivering their project ideas with the chance of getting shortlisted to pitch for a £1,000 prize package.
“As part of the prize package the winners will secure financial support and business support services to allow them to grow and the pitch will take place during Enterprise Week in March.”
Danielle McNally, Business Officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council said the competition is open to all Social Enterprises within the Council area and a prize of £1000 will be awarded though a pitching competition to be held during Enterprise Week 2019 (04th – 08th March 2019).
“Entering the competition is simple and free just log onto our website at www.derrystrabane.com/socialenterprise and complete the form and return it along with your business plan before the deadline of 5pm on 04 February 2019.”
Mayor Boyle added that Council’s participation in the Global Entrepreneurship Week is great news for the business community in Derry and Strabane.
“I am delighted that Council is taking part in this celebration and to showcase the fantastic work being done locally by innovators, job creators and entrepreneurs across the Council area.
“Global Entrepreneurship Week is a great way of promoting business start-ups and encouraging them to bring ideas to life and drive economic growth,” he said.
Danielle McNally added that other events taking place during the week include a Techies in Residence event aimed at social enterprises, social entrepreneurs and those working in the third sector, and taking place at the Holywell Trust Bishop Street on Tuesday 13 November from 12.30pm to 2pm.
Encouraging participation in the events, Danielle McNally said it is a great way of helping to transform the community and social enterprise sectors.
