SDLP Councillor for Foyleside has welcomed funding secured for recycling which will be used to help deal with the issue of dumping in frequently targeted lanes and alleys.
Said Cllr Cusack: “I am delighted to hear that after considerable work by officers, funding has been secured which will enable the Council to role out measures to deal with persistent dumping in the areas worst affected.
“As people know this reckless dumping of household and bulky waste has been a persistent problem in the streets and laneways of Rosemount and the Strand Road and a blight on the community as a whole.
“As a Councillor for these areas I have dealt with countless cases as the frustration of residents increases at the treatment of their neighbourhoods and any solution cannot come too soon.
“It is envisaged that the scheme which will be launched in January, will involve identifying and educating those who are oblivious to the consequences of their actions.
“Proactive participation by landlords is particularly encouraged as their tenants need to be included.
“There will also be the opportunity to devise plans for helping those with recycling and excess waste issues.
“This funding will see a programme of action taken by Council Environment Department over the coming months including door to door engagement, information gathering as well as preventative measures.
“I look forward to these proactive measures and an enthusiastic public participation in order to try eradicate this issue for good,” she added.
