SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack has called on Council officers to clamp down on straying, particularly in built up terraced areas.
Said Cllr Cusack: “The issue of dogs being allowed to wander the streets of neighbourhoods has no doubt decreased over the years as people become more responsible, however it is still an issue in many areas.
“Recently, I witnessed over four dogs unsupervised in the Rosemount area within as many minutes.
Not only is this illegal, it is concerning in that any dog can be provoked and attack or be attacked.
“There’s the issue of the well-being of the animal as well as the public.
“These built up streets are also covered in dog foul and one lady explained how they had to enter their car from the opposite side to avoid it.
“Residents should not have to tolerate this.
“It is also just not acceptable that streets next to a Primary school are a serious health hazard.
“In a recent Health and Community Committee I have therefore asked that the Wardens pay particular attention to this area and take a more proactive approach to dealing with the issue.
“As an avid dog lover I cannot understand why someone would have a pet and leave it to roam the streets.
“If anyone is unable to look after their dog for any reason the Council and animal charities can help to find it a loving home,’’ she added.
