A DERRY-based police officer dubbed ‘The Lone Ranger’ helped nab two suspects for robbing a jewellery store on the North Coast on Friday.
The poilce say an alert went out on Friday after the suspects fled in a BMW car from the scene of the heist in Portrush’s Dunluce Avenue and were heading to Derry.
And the sergeant single-handledly took the down and recovered all the stolen jewellery after he ditched his duties during filming for the new series of Derry Girls on Friday afternoon around the Guildhall.
This is PSNI Foyle describe the drama on their Facebook page:
“There was a serious ARMED ROBBERY yesterday in Portrush where 2 fellas threatened staff at Knife Point 🔪 & stole a quantity of Jewellery before making off by car 🚙
“A short time later we got word that the car 🚙 was now in our City!
“Sgt B and the rest of the Bogside, Brandywell & Fountain Neighbourhood Policing Team were busy managing traffic in the City Centre for #DerryGirls filming 🎥
“Sgt B was unwilling to interrupt filming but was desperate to go hunting these fellas. 🤔 what to do?
“There was only one answer, Sgt B would have to leave the team, fly solo and become . . . #TheLoneRanger
“He cruised around 🚔 until amazingly he spotted the car going down Bishop Street Without.
“He tucked in a couple of cars behind and followed it out the Letterkenny Road.
“It wasn’t looking good until the suspects made a fatal mistake: they turned left down Mullenan Road.
“It was time to spring into action! Sgt B sped past the suspects, slid the car 🚓🚨 sideways to block the whole road.
“Jumped out, pulled his gun 🔫 and screamed “show me your hands, throw the keys out the window”. To say our fellas 💩 themselves would be an understatement.
“Within minutes all stolen property was recovered and two shocked suspects behind bars 👍🏼
On Saturday, the two suspects were charged to Ballymena Magistrates Court with robbery.
