SDLP Mark H Durkan organised a workshop for letting agents and landlords in conjunction with Housing Rights, to better understand the impact of Universal Credit on the private housing sector.
The Foyle MLA said: “I convened a workshop for letting agents and landlords with Housing Rights NI to discuss the impact of Universal Credit and how to better navigate the system for all involved.
“It is clear, that the onslaught of Universal Credit is causing chaos and disadvantaging both tenants and landlords. The system is designed in such a way that the burden of responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of tenants.
“Claimants are having to liaise directly with Universal Credit to resolve any issues that should arise- considering that information provided is often conflicting, the system is proving extremely difficult to navigate.
“This was not an entirely unforeseen circumstance, after seeing the disastrous roll-out of the scheme in England, the SDLP had proposed cost neutral amendments which could have prevented a great deal of stress and hardship.
“However, these were voted down in by the DUP, Sinn Féin and Alliance members in the Assembly.
“The stark reality is that, unless action is taken by an Assembly, we are going to see more people plunged into debt and homelessness.”
