Christmas countdown….Mayor John Boyle paid a visit to Eglinton based glass crafter Natasha Duddy to launch details of this year’s Guildhall Craft Fair that takes place this weekend
Derry is really getting into the festive spirit this week with the big Christmas lights switch on taking place on Thursday evening, and a flying visit from Santa himself kicking off the Christmas campaign for the city.
The Guildhall Craft Fair runs from Friday November 23rd – Sunday November 25th, and features over 40 exhibitors of handmade bespoke goods – the perfect place to source some unique, quality gifts for loved ones.
Speaking ahead of the Fair, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor John Boyle, encouraged people to support local shops and businesses this year by checking out the fantastic offering of gift ideas this weekend. “I am really looking forward to this year’s event.
“The Craft Fair, which takes place against the magical backdrop of the Guildhall, really is a treasure trove for anyone who loves hunting for that original gift.
“Something that you won’t find in a high street store or online, and which will remain a keepsake for many years to come.
“It’s a fantastic showcase for the city’s wealth of craft talent, and it offers a shopping experience which will undoubtedly get you in the Christmas spirit.
“I would really encourage everyone to come along and show their support for our local crafters, as well as the local economy, by shopping local this weekend.”
Among the wide range of festive delights on offer at the 24th annual Craft Fair, are jewellery, leather art, pottery, glass, ceramics and knitware pieces as well as a number of artisan food ranges from some of the finest local artists, designers and producers.
Event Co-Ordinator with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Helena Hasson, said this year there will be even more on offer.
“By linking the Craft Fair to the ‘Christmas Lights Switch On’ we are hoping to attract a new generation of craft fair fans, bringing it closer to Christmas when people are really seeking some gift inspiration.
“We’ve extended the number of craft stands to 45, the largest number ever featured at the event, in a bid to accommodate the growing number of shoppers who see the Craft Fair as the official start to their Christmas shopping.
“As always there are returning exhibitors as well as new faces, so there is always something unique to appeal to new visitors.
“It really is the ultimate festive day out, with the opportunity to browse at your leisure while enjoying the seasonal music performed by local choirs and musicians.
“Then why not treat yourself at one of the many coffee shops and restaurants surrounding the Guildhall set against the magical backdrop of the Christmas lights.”
