A MOTION by Sinn Féin Councillor Sharon Duddy which went before Derry City and Strabane District Council calling for the Council to support the #NotSorryMums campaign run by the Public Health Agency and the Department of Health has been unanimously passed.
Councillor Duddy said: “I was very pleased to get unanimous support for this motion.
“It’s worrying that the North of Ireland has one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding.
“The #NotSorryMums campaign aims to encourage women here to breastfeed and highlights how mothers never have to apologise for feeding their baby in public.
“Breast feeding has been shown by numerous studies to be the healthier option for both mother and baby. Breastfeeding protects babies and their mothers against a wide range of illnesses including respiratory and urinary tract infections, allergies, sudden infant death syndrome and childhood leukaemia.
“On top of this mothers who breast feed have been shown to be at lower risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
“The benefits cannot be ignored.
