Irish government should bring Brexit workshops to the north – Anderson

Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson

SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said that if the Irish government is serious about its pledges to the people on the north on Brexit it should hold Brexit preparedness events in the north.

Martina Anderson said: “An Tanaiste has been in Donegal as part of a series of ‘Getting Ireland Brexit Ready’ events held across the 26 Counties.

“There is no doubt that people living in border areas will be most affected by the impact of Brexit.

“This includes cross-border workers, students and small businesses trading in border areas.

“But the impact of Brexit will not stop at the border.

“If the Irish government is actually serious about standing up for the interests of people in the north then these events should also be held in the north.

“I have hosted countless events across the north and indeed across the island on Brexit and it is clear there is appetite for information.

“Already we have seen the Irish government renege on its commitment that people in the north would never agin be left behind by an Irish government when it decided to deny Irish citizens in the north access to their democratic rights by refusing to allocate its additional MEP seats to the north.

“If the pledges and commitments from the Irish government are to mean anything then they need to be more than just words.”
