Michael McCann of Templeard landed the fish on the Lackagh River in Co Donegal at 9.25 am on New Year’s Day.
The salmon weighed approximately five pounds and was caught on a single barbless hook before being released back into the water.
It was also the first caught and released during International Year of the Salmon.
Michael was one of 22 anglers fishing on the Lackagh at the time of the catch.
International Year of the Salmon is a world-wide initiative to raise awareness of what humans can do to ensure salmon and their habitats are conserved and restored against a backdrop of several environmental factors which have contributed to their decline.
