POLICE have evacuated homes in Derry tonight following the fourth security alert in the city in a day.
An Asda delivery van has been abandoned along Northland Road at its junction with Glen Road near St Mary’s School.
As a result, police have asked motorists to avoid the area.
Residents have been moved from their homes and police say Glen Development Initiative has been opened as a rest centre.
In a further incident, police say there has been another attempted hijacking this evening, this time on a buss at Moss Road.
PSNI Foyle say: “We appreciate there is a lot happening in the city tonight folks.
“It’s important we have the right information out there.
“We can confirm there has been an attempted hijacking of a local bus service in the area of Moss Road.
“We are responding to these incidents with public safety remaining our top priority.”
Police are continuing to deal with two hijackings of vans earlier today in Creggan.
