SINN Féin environmental spokesperson Councillor Sharon Duddy has welcomed plans by Derry City and Strabane District Council to extend the kerbside garden waste collections to homes within the Derry City area on a fortnightly basis.
This follows a successful funding application made to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
Said Cllr Duddy: “This move by the DCSDC which has to be welcomed will divert a further 1,521 tonnes of waste from residual treatment and consequently contribute to an increase in the Council’s composting rate.
“The next step will be that Council officials will identify suitable areas in the city to participate in the scheme.
“They will take into consideration properties that have gardens and commence a roll-out of bins to these households thereafter.
“Information packs will be distributed to householders in the areas where the scheme will happen so that they are aware of how it will be operated in the times ahead.”
