Adam Raymond McDaid, (24) of Bond’s Hill in the city, stole £1,500 worth of knives from a catering van servicing the premiere.
McDaid then fled while being chased by a number of have-a-go-heroes from the Omniplex Cinema.
The thief – who has 140 previous convictions and was only recently released from prison on licence – ran into the Star Bingo hall in Bank Place and locked himself in a disabled toilet.
Police were called and the McDaid was arrested for theft and assault after he headbutted a police officer.
Today, he faced the local magistrates’ court in Bishop Street where he was convicted and sent to prison for four months.
The sitting magistrate wondered whether McDaid’s escapade could feature in series three of Derry Girls.
PSNI Foyle say on their Facebook page of the incident:
“What was your reaction to DERRY GIRLS?
1. Get down to the premiere 🎥
2. Get selfie with the stars ⭐️
3. Stay home (not your thing 🤷♂️)
4. Go down to the festivities and steal loads of knives 🔪 and a coat 🧥 from the Catering Van before running off and locking yourself in a Disabled Toilet
“What? None of you picked Option 4.
“Well. . . one fella did. He didn’t appreciate it when Police opened the Disabled Toilet Door🚪and so he was also arrested for assault on Police as well as the thefts.
“Our #LocalPolicingTeam #TacticalSupportGroup #CyberSupportUnit and #ReducingOffendingUnit did a PERFECT job in building a case and Charging the male to Court this morning.
“He’s been immediately Convicted and sentenced to 4 Months in Prison starting right about . . . . . . . . Now! 😁 👋 (Bye Bye) #HeDidntLikeDerryGirls #LockedInTheBogs #HavaANiceFewMonths #KeeingPeopleSafe
