Derry ‘death driver’ remanded in custody on a host of motoring offences

A DERRY ‘death’ driver has been remanded in custody today after a district judge found he posed a high risk of re-offending.

The motorist was detected by police in Derry on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified on Tuesday night following a tip-off from the public.

He had previously been arrested in December in the city after he was found to have fraudulently obtained insurance and had neglected to wear his seatbelt.

Concerned residents had alerted police of his anti-social driving and his vehicle was seized.

Red diesel was also detected in the vehicle and he was dealt with by HM Revenue and Customs.

He also fitted his car with false plates and failed to stop for police.

And he committed further motoring offences on Tuesday night and police patrols were alerted to his activities.

PSNI Foyle say on its Facebook page: “On Tuesday night he pushed his luck too far!

“Highly trained Roads Policing officers detected him driving dangerously in the city and they used their tactical driving skills to bring the car to a controlled halt, ably assisted by local officers and a Tactical Support group.

“Further thanks to the resident who initially reported him to us and please remember you can use the crimestoppers number to report crime and your information will be treated in the strictest confidence.

“Please consider how you would feel if a member of your family or friends was injured or killed by a death driver, who refused to stop for Police?”

Police say that earlier today the driver appeared at Derry Magistrates’ Court charged over his illegal driving on Tuesday night.

He was charged with dangerous driving, having no insurance, failing to stop for police, driving while disqualified. and fraudulently using a vehicle registration mark.

The defendant was further charged with having no vehicle test certificate, resisting police and using a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

District Judge Barney McElhom remanded him in custody, stating that his risk of re-offending was too high.

PSNI Foyle added: “Please never run from the Police!

“If you killed someone, you and their family will live with it forever.

“As you can see the penalties can be severe.”
