SDLP Councillor for Foyleside Shauna Cusack has called on the Council to finish the installation of lighting in the local Cregganburn Park between the Glen Road and Rosemount.
The street lighting work started just over four years ago but was never completed.
Said Cllr Cusack states: “The regeneration of the Cregganburn Park started four years ago in January 2015 with £600,000 funding from what was then the Department for Regional Development.
“This budget was to cover many major aspects of the greenway scheme but was insufficient to fully illuminate all the pathways in the area.
“In March last year I was relieved to see Council respond proactively and oversee the lighting of the section from the Baldrick steps to the middle crossroads, which I’d lobbied continuously for.
“Promises had always been made that all areas would follow suit as and when finance became available.
“We are now a year further down the line and I am again calling for this project to be completed in full.
“The final section of pathway, which has the steepest incline and therefore, speaking from experience, considerable safety concerns, still remains without lights.
“With the continued increase in public usership of the area, which was exactly the intention of the Active Travel funding campaign, I believe completing the lighting of this busy park should be made a priority and all local residents agree.
“I have therefore asked senior council officers to investigate options and source or secure funding opportunities as soon as possible.
“I am glad to have been assured that such discussions will hopefully take place next week,” she added.
