SINN Féin’S Elisha McCallion has said the Irish government should now be actively planning for the reunification of Ireland.
Speaking in Dublin at the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement Implementation Committee in the Oireachtas the Foyle MP said:
“It is clear there is a growing demand for and consideration of Irish unity from across the island.
“The people of Ireland did not vote for Brexit and are now looking to the Good Friday Agreement and its provision for constitutional change as a solution.
“The Irish government have a responsibility to uphold the Good Friday Agreement in its entirety, and that includes the principle of consent.
“The Irish government should now be opening up and leading the conversation on Irish unity as provided for in the Good Friday Agreement.
“People across the country, north and south, are ahead of the Irish government on this and expect the Irish government to start planning for Irish unity in an inclusive and democratic conversation,” added the former Mayor of Derry.
