Eastwood: Backstop is our ultimate insurance

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has said that it is vital that we do not lose sight of the importance of the Backstop.

He added that regardless of the possibility of a second referendum or the potential successes of London taking a ‘no-deal’ scenario off the table, the Backstop will continue to be our only insurance policy.

The Foyle MLA said: “Short of remaining in the European Union or a soft Brexit, the Backstop is the only viable mechanism that will protect the people of the North.

“Anything short of implementing the Backstop will result in chaos for our people here.

“With no alternative to frictionless trade with our largest export market, disruption to businesses cannot be overstated.

“Aside from the economic cost that will come from failing to bank the Backstop, the damage it could cause our peace process is a price too big to pay.

“The Backstop must be banked. Failure to do so will be a grave dereliction of duty by the British Government.”
