SINN Féin’s Karen Mullan has welcomed confirmation from the Department of Communities that a further £300,000 will be available to advice groups dealing with the impact of Tory welfare cuts.
Speaking after meeting with senior officials at Department with Alex Maskey MLA, the Foyle MLA said:
“I welcome confirmation from the Permanent Secretary that £300,000 extra funding will be made available to frontline advice services from 1 April 2019.
“I have worked closely with the advice sector, and the reality is, staff are under severe pressure dealing with the impact of Tory welfare cuts, particularly with the high levels of appeals resulting from the flawed and cruel PIP assessment process.
“We made it abundantly clear to officials that we feel the department is failing some of the most vulnerable people in our society and urgent reform is needed.
“Sinn Féin will continue to work with the advice sector and engage with the Department to ensure our vital welfare services are adequately resourced.”
