SINN Féin’s Elisha McCallion has said any future EU funding post Brexit should benefit border communities north and south.
Speaking from the European Parliament in Brussels, the Foyle MP said:
“I met this week with the vice chair of the European Parliament’s regional development committee, Joachim Zeller, in the European Parliament in Brussels to discuss post-Brexit funding for border areas.
“EU funding has played a key role in the development of communities and it is vital this funding continues.
“The EU is currently considering a post Brexit fund for Ireland and it is essential that the Irish government ensures this funding does not stop at the border and communities along the border in the north can avail of this proposed funding.
“I know the value of EU funding for projects along the border in both Derry and Donegal and throughout the border corridor.
“Brexit will be a disaster for Ireland north and south whether there is a deal or no deal.
“That is why the majority of people in the north rejected the reckless Tory Brexit.
“The Irish government and the EU must now work together to ensure communities along the border corridor, north and south, are not left behind,” she added.
