Modern laws needed to tackle gambling problems – Mellon

MODERN, fit-for-purpose legislation is required to deal with the issue of problem gambling, Sinn Féin Councillor Aileen Mellon has said.

She was commenting as new measures come into force in Britain reducing the maximum stake on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBT) from £100 to £2.

Bookmakers here are expected to voluntarily adopt the same limit.

Aileen Mellon said: “We welcome the fact that some have begun to self-regulate, in anticipation of a change to the law in respect to gambling and gaming machines.

“We do, however, urgently need modern and fit for purpose gambling legislation that is able to deal with current and future technological advances in the gambling world.”
