SINN Féin Councillor Sharon Duddy has urged anyone who is dumping old tins of paint to use the deposit bins at the local recycling centres in the city.
Councillor Duddy said “I was out on constituency business in Lisfannon Park and residents asked me to go and look at a number of laneways and car parks where tins of paint had been thrown all over the place.
“It was all over the footpaths, the walls at the backs of peoples homes and it was a terrible looking mess.
“Not only is it unsightly but also there is a cost if someone drives through the paint and damages their car, children out playing in the street getting their clothes and shoes covered in paint and bringing that into the house.
“There is also the danger to family pets as water-based paints may irritate a dog’s skin.
“It’s very important to highlight that under the Landfill Directive paints or solvents cannot be collected under the bulky lift schemes.
“I would urge anyone who has old tins of paint or varnish to depose of them in deposit bins at the local recycling centres in the city or call the Council for advice on their disposal,” she added.
