It is understood police took woman to hospital in the back of a landrover for treatment to her injuries received during the disorder.
However, it is not yet known if she sustained a bullet injury.
Footage on social media showed police landrovers being pelted with dozens of petrol bombs and other debris including fireworks.
A van also reported to have been burned out in the area.
The trouble comes just a few days before dissident republicans hold an illegal parade on Easter Monday in Creggan.
Police have now cordoned off Fanad Drive as a result of the trouble.
There are reports that the trouble broke out after police carried out raids on houses in the Mulroy Park and Galliagh areas.
Supt Alan Hutton said: “We are currently responding to reports that a member of the public has been injured and I would appeal for calm.”
DUP MLA Gary Middleont described the trouble as “disgraceful scenes of violence in the Creggan estate”
“PSNI and members of the public being put in danger by unrepresentative thugs intent on destroying communities,” he tweeted.
A Police Federation spokesperson said that there was “absolutely no excuse” for attacking the PSNI.
“They are protecting that community and aren’t there for the good of their health,” the spokesperson said on Twitter.
“Such behaviour should be roundly condemned.”
The trouble came just hours after a high powered US delegation visited Derry and the border.
