THE PSNI in Derry have praised the actions of a member of the public who raised the alarm after he spotted a female jumping into the River Foyle from Craigavon Bridge.
The woman was later taken by ambulance to Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment for hypothermia.
PSNI Foyle say: “Police are grateful for the fast actions of a member of public who just about noticed a female jump off the top of the Craigavon Bridge yesterday at around 5.20 pm and raised the alarm.
“He stayed to help and directed us to the incident.
“Within minutes, Police, Fire Service, Ambulance and Foyle Search and Rescue were on scene and were able to get the lady to safety quickly.
“We would like to thank the member of the public who stopped and dialled 999 and our colleagues in the emergency services for another speedy and successful rescue.

Foyle Search and Rescue say: “Police Service of Northern Ireland activated Foyle Search & Rescue’s Pager system to reports by a member of the public that a person had been observed entering the river.
“Emergency Response Teams responded to the scene with Shore crew activating throw lines to the person in the water with support from a Jet ski.
“Boat crew rescued the person & brought them to our Prehen Base.
“On arrival they were assessed by EFR’s with spinal precautions applied and also treated for early onset hypothermia.
“Then transferred to the care of NIAS paramedics before being transported to hospital by ambulance.
“Thanks to the member of the public, CCTV, PSNI, NIAS & NIFRS and appreciation to our ERT for their quick response and professionalism.”
