The former MLA stood on a People Before Profit ticket and polled 1,035 first preference votes for Derry City and Strabane District Council election.
He was elected at stage 5 of the count receiving 1,301 votes.
But there was more bad news for Sinn Fein as councillor Sharon Duddy was eliminated at this stage after polling only 594 first preference votes.
Earlier independent Gary Donnelly topped the poll and was duly elected after receiving 1,374 first preference votes.
There are now three seats remaining with the current SDLP Mayor for Derry and Strabane John Boyle looking good to retain his seat.
The remaining two seats could go to Sinn Fein.
But SDLP hopeful Cathy Breslin could sneak in on John Boyle’s transfers and pinch a seat from Sinn Fein.
