Eastwood to unveil anti-Brexit bus in bid to reclaim John Hume’s European seat

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood running as party’s candidate in European Parliament elections

SDLP European Candidate Colum Eastwood is today (Wednesday 8th May) launching his EU Campaign at the Derry/Donegal border.

Mr Eastwood is expected to issue a direct message to the Brexiteers calling them out on their “campaign of lies” and calling for “honest politics” focusing on securing our future in Europe.

The SDLP leader will say that this campaign is “our people’s vote” and this election “is our time to take back control.”

A campaign bus will be revealed that is a direct comparison to the Vote Leave campaign bus – only this time the SDLP is determined to ensure people are told the truth.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Mr Eastwood said: “This is an incredibly important election.

“Over the past three years, we have all witnessed the destruction and the chaos caused by the Westminster Government trying to enforce Brexit against our will.

“The voices of people here have been silenced and our interests sidelined. That cannot be allowed to continue.

“This election is a chance for our voice to be finally heard, it is our people’s vote.

“Based on the figures, the SDLP is best placed to take the seat off the Brexiteers and send a second pro-European voice to Europe to protect our interests.

“I am asking people to put traditional party politics aside and to come out and vote against Brexit, against borders and instead vote for our place in Europe.

“They can best do that by backing me as their next MEP.

“It was John Hume who championed the case of Europe, who used Europe as a lever and as a guardian of our peace process.

“At this moment of great uncertainty, it’s time that we reclaim John Hume’s seat and send the SDLP back to Europe.

“The campaign of lies from the brexiteers needs challenged and it’s time for honest politics.

“It’s time for people here to take back control,” added the Foyle MLA.
