Miss Durkan believes the “full and comprehensive review of business rates” announced by Sue Gray, the Permanent Secretary at the Department of Finance, could provide a lifeline for some small enterprises in what is becoming an increasingly challenging climate for business.
Cllr Durkan commented: “In recent years we have witnessed many of our local and family businesses in Derry city centre being forced to bring down the shutters because of burdensome business rates.
“In Derry, our local enterprises are facing the added challenges of Brexit uncertainty and the economic impact of austerity measures.
“It is imperative that the issue of business rates is tackled as expeditiously as possible.
“We need a functioning government up and running to put in place protective measures for our local enterprise sector. These local businesses are the heartbeat of our city centre,” added the barrister.
