DETECTIVES in Derry have yet to identify the body of a man found in a burning stolen car at the weekend.
The stolen Mazda 6 vehicle caught fire after hitting a lamppost in Fairview Road in Galliagh on Saturday morning around 4.15 am.
It is understood detectives at Strand Road are liaizing with Gardai in the case in an effort to identify the male.
A police spokeswoman said they are continuing to appeal for witnesses and confirmed the name of the deceased remains unknown.
Other people were in the car but were not present when PSNI and fire service attended and discovered the man’s body inside.
The Red Mazda 6 saloon car was stolen from the Oakfield Avenue area of the city.
It came to rest in a cul-de-sac next to a water pumping station and the back of the vehicle was severely damaged by fire, with the bonnet coming off.
The vehicle was covered with a tarpaulin while the area was examined by crime scene officers.
Chief Inspector Jonny Hunter said anyone who saw the car being driven in the area of Oakfield Avenue or Fairview Road before the crash or anyone who witnessed the incident to contact officers.
There was significant traffic disruption throughout Saturday after many of the main roads in and out of the area were off around Whitechapel roundabout.
Police thanked the community for their patience and co-operation while the investigation continued throughout Saturday until the cordon was lifted later that evening.
