SINN Féin Health spokesperson Councillor Sandra Duffy has applauded the NSPCC for its ‘fight for a fair start’ campaign.
Speaking after the launch, the Derry councillor said: “It is shocking that perinatal mental health services for new mums in the North are lagging behind similar services in Britain.
“I commend the NSPCC for launching their Fight for a Fair Start campaign for better specialist care for new mums.
“Investment for specialist perinatal mental health services is vital so families can access the right support in their local area.
“It is also vital that midwives and health visitors get the training and support they need in order to provide new mothers with the sufficient health treatment.
“Sinn Fein continues to support the provision of perinatal care and call for additional perinatal mental health provision, specifically the establishment of a mother and baby unit.
“It is also important, given the lack of perinatal services across Ireland, that both Health Departments continue to look at the potential for all-island perinatal services in improving care for mothers,” she added.
