Music recital sessions start this Friday lunchtime in Guildhall’s Main Hall
Throughout the month of August music lovers can enjoy a series of lunchtime performances by local musician and organist in residence Stewart Smith, played on the beautifully restored Guildhall organ.
The instrument is the second largest concert organ in N. Ireland, and it takes pride of place dominating the stage of the Main Hall after extensive work carried out as part of the £10 million restoration of the historic civic hub.
The original Guildhall organ was installed in the Main Hall in 1891.
Speaking ahead of the recital series, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Michaela Boyle, said she looked forward to throwing open the doors of the historic building.
“The lunchtime organ recitals were a great success last year and I know that they will prove just as popular this summer,” she declared.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to hear the organ being played by an accomplished musician, and to enjoy the music in such a stunning setting.
“While we have visitors from around the globe touring the Guildhall every day, I also look forward to welcoming more local people to the Guildhall where they can learn more about the Grade A listed building and its colourful history, as well as enjoy a cultural experience with a difference.”
The recitals, which are all free, will feature a medley of pieces from the Main Organ repertoire as well as orchestral transcriptions and folk music pieces.
The performances will take place between 1pm – 2pm, kicking off on this Friday, August 2, followed by recitals on Monday 19th August, Wednesday 21st August, Thursday 22nd August, Monday 26th August, Wednesday 28th August and Thursday 28th August.
