SINN Féin Karen Mullan has said schools should not be placing their ranking on league tables ahead of the interests of students.
Speaking after the release of GCSE results, the party’s Education spokesperson commented: “GCSE results should be considered on what’s best for students progressing to A-Levels and not how it affects a school’s place on a league table.
“Many parents have raised concerns that the GCSE results are being used by schools to determine whether their children can go on to study a subject at A-Level.
“Some students will have missed out on a grade by a narrow margin but remain determined to study the subject for A-Level to pursue their aspirations.
“In considering the move to A-Levels schools need to put the needs of students at the center and not the perceived reputation of schools.
“It’s unacceptable that some schools are disregarding that in favour of their place within league tables and perceived perception.
“It’s time to end the the school league table culture here which is damaging our young peoples prospects and having a detrimental impact on education,” added the Foyle MLA.
