SINN Féin’s Karen Mullan has backed calls for mandatory autism training to be delivered for teaching staff.
The party’s Education Spokesperson was commenting after joining Autism NI at a rally outside Stormont.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Sinn Féin support calls for the delivery of mandatory autism training for teachers.
“Autism effects how children communicate, interact and learn.
“One in 30 pupils have autism and every step must be taken to ensure these children have the best start in life.
“This requires additional funding and resources to be made available to ensure teaching staff receive the necessary training to provide autistic children with the highest standard of education they deserve.
“Sinn Féin have raised this with the Permanent Secretary for Education and will continue to lobby the department to ensure mandatory autism training is in place for teaching staff.”
