THE Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Michaela Boyle, this week welcomed a major delegation from China to the city, as she jointly hosted a celebration of Chinese Culture marking four key historic anniversaries.
The delegation was led by the Chinese Consul General Madame Zhang Meifang, and made up of government officials and VIPs from Beijing, as well as cultural performers who led a colourful showcase of traditional Chinese music and dance.
Events are being held in both Derry and Belfast this week by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, the 65th Anniversary of UK – China Relations at the chargé d’affaire level, the 5th year of the Chinese Consul General locating in Belfast and China National Day, which is traditionally celebrated on October 1st.
A China National Day Celebration took place in the Guildhall on September 24 hosted by Madame Zhang and Mayor Boyle, and members of the local Sai Pak Chinese community.
Welcoming the delegation to the event Mayor Boyle said it was another opportunity to strengthen relations between the North West and China.
“This is the latest in a series of meetings and engagements between local partners in business and education which have been establishing strong ties between the North West and China.
“I am delighted to welcome Madame Zhang to the City once again for what is an important celebration for our local Chinese Community.
“It offers the chance to explore new cultures, learn more about Chinese tradition and highlight the important role of our local Chinese community in the rich ethnic tapestry of our City and District.
“I look forward to continuing to explore the future prospects that these discussions may present to the benefit of both our countries based on our shared interests and ambitions.”
Speaking at the event Madame Zhang Meifang said she was delighted to have the opportunity to return to the city and build on the growing relationship and explore further the shared interests of China and the North West.
Following today’s event, the Mayor will be joined by senior representatives from Derry City and Strabane District Council and the Chamber of Commerce for a China National Day Evening Celebration tomorrow in the Culloden, Belfast and a Cultural Gala Performance at the Ulster Hall in Belfast.
