POLICE in Derry are warning the public to be their guard against the latest scam doing the rounds, this time by email.
PSNI Foyle say: “It seems that every other day we are putting out information about scams. Some people are fortunate enough to recognise the signs and don’t end up out of pocket.
“Some have lost as little as £5 and others have been conned out of thousands.
“The financial hit is one thing, but these frausdster also play on fear and intimidation.
“Just this week two calls came in from concerned residents who were contacted out of the blue from an email address with some variation of RECORDEDYOU@.
“The email claims they have footage they will upload if they don’t receive payment in dollars or bitcoin.
“Chances are this is a blanket email they are sending out to hundreds of people in the hope that someone will pay up however the threat is perhaps enough to make someone who is already vulnerable or anxious hand over the money.
“It can also mess with your head and you might feel you can’t tell anyone about it.
“Here’s the thing – YOU CAN. Tell us, tell a friend or a family member.
“Don’t let online fraudsters control your life or your bank account. Whether they are bluffing about the footage or perhaps they might have some images you would rather others might not see – there is no judgement here. Just help when you need it.
