SDLP Health Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed the Department of Health’s intention to make the life-changing Cystic Fibrosis drugs Orkambi, Symkevi and Kalydeco available in the North.
The announcement follows recent deals struck by both the Scottish government and England NHS with pharmaceutical company Vertex, making this once ‘unaffordable’ treatment a reality.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I am delighted that those living with Cystic Fibrosis in the North will now be afforded access to this life-changing drug, bringing us in line with elsewhere on these islands.
“The SDLP has supported the introduction of this transformative drug from the outset.
“Over two years ago, I walked alongside people living with Cystic Fibrosis and their families to Stormont demanding action.
“Whilst frustrating that it has taken so long to strike a deal, I am pleased that we can see this tremendous campaign through to a positive resolution.
“It has been an uphill battle to reach this point yet campaigners have fought fervently and undeterred despite so many setbacks.
“I commend all those involved for their perseverance and continued hope throughout this four-year long campaign.
“As a result of their hard-fought efforts, this drug will transform lives here, particularly many young people living with the disease.
“Today marks a small victory in health here but a victory nonetheless, one that will mean so much to so many people.
“The price of good health cannot be quantified- it is not a luxury given to all but it is essential that our health service and indeed our elected representatives, continue to strive for access to medical advances for those who need it most.
“It now falls to the Department to deliver on their promise and make this drug available as a matter of urgency,” added Mr Durkan.
