Michelle O’Neill facing challenge to her vice presidency from party rival John O’Dowd at Derry Ard Fheis

SINN Féin President Mary Lou McDonald will address her party’s Ard Fheis in Derry this evening, ahead of multiple elections on both sides of the border.

Before her televised speech, the result will be announced of the Vice Presidential election in which Michelle O’Neill is being challenged from John O’Dowd.

At the opening of the Ard Fheis last night, Finance spokesman Pearse Doherty attacked the Fine Gael-led government for giving what he termed a “free pass” to the banks.

To applause, he maintained that only Sinn Féin would take on the banks and ensure they paid what he called their “fair share of tax”.

Before Mr Doherty spoke, Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald suggested that history was being written and Irish unity was being discussed like never before.

Vice President Michelle O’Neill told delegates from the podium that a referendum on Irish unity is coming and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar cannot ignore this reality.

Ms O’Neill will be a focus of considerable attention today as she seeks to be re-elected Vice President against challenger John O’Dowd.

However, there is no debate between the candidates at the Ard Fheis bein held in the Millennium Forum.
