The visiting driver had stopped off to take a picture of the Derry Girls Mural while on a break.
When he turned round, the coat was gone including the keys to his coach and his wallet.
But luckily for him, the keys were later handed in at the local shopping centre.
Now the hunt is on across the city for light-fingered thief.
PSNI Foyle say on its Facebook page: “Op Seasons Greetings 🎅🎅 – We’re on the beat today until late tonight.
“We’re currently investigating the theft of a jacket from a person on Orchard Street.
“The victim took his coat off while he was taking a few photos of the now famous Derry Girls Mural.
“When he turned back his coat was missing, along with his wallet and keys to the bus he was driving.
“We don’t like people coming to the city and leaving with a bad experience.0
“It turns out the theft victim is on a break before collecting his tour group.
“So we run around the town, checking the shopping centres, and any cubby holes on the street where a thief might stash items.
“Whilst at customer service in Foyleside Shopping Centre, we were relieved to hear that the keys to the bus had been handed in to Foyleside staff.
“Thanks Foyleside 😃.
“When we handed the keys back to the bus driver, you’d swear he’d won the lottery.
“I quote him ‘If you were a woman I’d hug you’. John insisted on a hug anyway 😊.
“The story doesn’t end there folks. Colleagues are currently trawling CCTV for this thief.
“Fingers crossed we’ll nab him soon.”
