The remains of Derry woman Helena McElhennon have been found following a seven week search.
Ms McElhennon, a mum of four from Draperstown, had been missing since late November 2019. Her vehicle was located by police at the Foyle Bridge in Derry shortly after her last sighting.
Extensive ground and water searches have taken place in recent months and fundraisers were held to support the search.
The sad news came this morning when Ms McElhennon’s family confirmed that her body was recovered on Tuesday night.
The discovery was made by Search Team NorthWest during a coordinated search. Volunteers then raised the alarm to PSNI Foyle. Assistance was requested from Foyle Search and Rescue to aid with the recovery.
A statement on the ‘Bring Helena Home’ Facebook page said: “It is with a sad and heavy heart we tell you that late yesterday evening we found Helena during our daily search.
“While we always held to hope we would find her alive unfortunately this was not to be.
“We understand that yesterday there were many people asking for updates of the search however we had to go through a process to confirm this and inform family members.
“Our sincere thanks go to extended family, friends, strangers and most of all the many different search teams who have helped us over the past few weeks.
“Funeral arrangements will be posted later and at this time we ask that you give us some time come to terms with what has happened.
“Rest In Peace Helena.”
