THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan and party colleague Sinead McLaughlin MLA have met with Translink CEO Chris Conway to discuss a number of transport concerns relating to the North West.
In addition, Mr Durkan called for a substantial increase in investment for public transport if current provisions are to be made sustainable.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Both myself and my colleague Sinead McLaughlin raised several issues important to many people in this constituency and surrounding areas, relating to the critical need for improved accessibility to public transport.
“Translink acknowledged the role of public transport in driving forward the wider economic development not just within Derry but right across the North West.
“It is clear that this opportunity has been one denied to Derry for too long.
“I spoke at length on a number of issues including the importance of ensuring that concessionary travel to the International Airport- a provision which is available elsewhere- can be secured for Derry.
“I stressed that Translink liaise with the local Airporter service in regards to senior citizens who have been unable to utilise their free concessionary travel.
“This is a massive concern for many people here and I hope efforts can be made to promote existing train and bus links.”
Added Mr Durkan: “I am pleased Translink have taken on board some of our representations.
“We have received assurances that they will carry out a feasibility study for timetable changes for the railway, including more frequent services on Sundays and the introduction of early morning services to facilitate commuters from Derry to Dublin.
“Better local services with more user-friendly times will increase practicality for people and reduce reliance on cars.
“These are common sense moves.
“Now we need to make sure that public transport is properly resourced, to ensure these crucial environmental and economic improvements can be delivered.“
