MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Michaela Boyle, has officially opened the new shared community space at Lincoln Courts in the Waterside.
The £700,000 project is part of Council’s Capital Development plan with funding support from the Department for Communities.
The project saw the demolition of the existing centre followed by the construction of a new facility which includes a function hall, social space, computer suite and meeting rooms.
The Mayor was joined at the official opening by community representatives and David Sales, Director of the Community Empowerment Division at the Department for Communities.
“The Lincoln Courts Community Centre will be a hub for the people of this area and a key resource with a wide range of facilities to meet their needs,” said Mayor Boyle.
“Community development and enhancement is a crucial element of both the Strategic Growth Plan and the Local Development Plan for the City and District.
“The project is in keeping with our commitment to provide communities with modern and well-equipped shared spaces where people can socialise, learn and have fun.”
David Sales, Director of the Community Empowerment Division of Department for Communities said: “This new facility which has received support of £300k from the Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund will provide the opportunity for residents to avail of many community based services.
“They will benefit from increased intervention such as health promotion, arts, sports activities and social events, creating confidence and greater capacity within the community.
“I would like to thank the community representatives in the Waterside Neighbourhood Renewal Area, Clooney Estate and Lincoln Courts for their dedication to ensure the delivery of this fantastic community space for their community.”
