SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has said that a meeting of the North South Ministerial Council must be used as a vehicle for developing a common approach to Coronavirus.
The Foyle MP has spoken to the Tánaiste Simon Coveney about the Irish Government response and received a COBRA briefing this morning about the British Government approach.
The North South Ministerial Council is due to meet today, Saturday, March 14.
Said the Foyle MP: “This is a very fast-changing situation.
“I recognise that it is a time of immense anxiety for people across the island.
“But in the midst of the panic, it is critical that we remain calm and united.
“Any decisions taken on a response to the threat of Coronavirus must be based on the medical advice available and on the needs of people and communities across this island.
“Today’s meeting of the North South Ministerial Council must be the vehicle for developing a common approach.
“All of the available medical advice needs to be explored and we need to agree a united response.
“There needs to be a clear and decisive plan and it must be communicated to people immediately.
“It is clear that schools will have to close at some point.
“Many will already be closed for a period next week for St Patrick’s day.
“We need to provide additional advice in advance of children returning to give school communities and parents an opportunity to prepare.
“This is a time for political leaders to work together across this island in the interests of public health and the people we represent.”
