Health chiefs believe the COVID-19 pandemic could peak across the North of Ireland and the UK within the next week.
This would put extra pressure on hospitals, including Derry’s Altnagelvin, as they battle to save the lives of those seriously ill with the deadly virus.
Dr Joe McEvoy told BBC Radio Foyle’s Mark Patterson Show today: “At the moment we are trying to plan clinics and trying to plan who do we see, and how many people do we need in, to try and cope with this,” .
“It’s an inexact science, but following on from statistics from other countries, I think we will see an increase to a marked degree over the next week, two weeks.
“We need to prepare for that now,” he added.
The message to the public is very simple over the Easter holidays: Stay at home, Protect the NHS, and help save lives.
