The Foyle MP said that additional police powers will not have to be used if people show compassion for each other by making sacrifices to stay apart.
Said Mr Eastwood: “The period of isolation and lockdown has been difficult on friends, families and communities across Ireland.
“Being separated from the people you care about, even if it’s only on the other side of a window, is hard.
“I know that Easter will be a particularly difficult time when most of us are used to celebrating with the people we love.
“This time of year also has a particular meaning for people on this island. 22 years ago we reached an accommodation that ended violence, laying the foundations for peace, partnership and reconciliation.
“This year, we need a new partnership between all the people of this island.
“We must commit to the selfless sacrifices needed to prevent the spread of coronavirus, to protect our frontline healthcare workers and to save lives.
“I’m urging people to be selfless.
“The PSNI and An Garda Síochána have new powers to compel social distancing and isolation.
“They shouldn’t be forced to use them.
“We all have an obligation to each other to act responsibly.
“This period of isolation will not go on forever.
“And while we find the familiar ease of the Easter season clashing with the raw reality of lockdown, we should all be comforted by the fact that by making these sacrifices, we’re bringing forward the time when we can be reunited with family, friends and those we care about.”
So stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.
