Anne sadly passed away on Sunday in Foyle Hospice after a long illness.
In a moving tribute, the St John’s Amubulance Service say: “Dearest friends and family of St John people, on Sunday (April 19) we learnt that our sister, friend, stalwart and lifelong member Mrs Anne Heaney MBE OStJ passed away into God’s loving care.
“Anne was a lifelong member of St John Ambulance in Derry.
“Before, and after, her appointment as Superintendent of Belmont Adult Division, Anne strived in everything she did doing it to the best of her ability.
“No job to big, no task to small; everyone welcomed with a smile and a hug!
“Anne, and her amazing personality, became known as the face of St John Ambulance in Derry and very quickly she was the go to person for anyone in the area that needed first aid or ambulance cover at their event.
“Anne loved to lead, she was much more than just a manager.
“She spent many hours volunteering for St John herself whilst rallying and leading her troops.
“Further, Anne was a dedicated, skilled, knowledgeable, well practised and a compassionate teacher.
“Anne showed a love for learning but more so showed a love for teaching others.
“For many years Anne was one of the few trainers within the Western Area (both at voluntary and commercial level) and many students flourished under her instruction.
“Many indeed going on to study healthcare related subjects at 3rd level university education, and all because Anne instilled a very humble love for patient care in them as far back as Badgers, Cadets and Young Adults.
“Most notable, in 2001 Anne received the MBE for services to St John Ambulance Northern Ireland!
“Anne worked tirelessly for St John Ambulance and like her dedicated daughter Linda, it oozed from her very being!
“Our St John Ambulance twin motto of ‘Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum’ (For the Faith and For the Service of Humanity) was never more brought to life than when Anne was in her St John uniform doing what she did best.
“We shall cherish the time that we shared together, the moments of laughter, of learning and moments when two unrelated people feel like family and all through St John Ambulance and Anne’s loving embrace.
“Our family of St John Ambulance will sorely miss Anne and wish to offer our sincerest condolences to Linda, her dedicated, loving and caring daughter; and to the wider family circle at this time.
“We take comfort in the knowing that an angel such as Anne will look over us and guide us all in our work through St John Ambulance, and we know that she will be at rest in God’s loving care.
“Mrs Anne Heaney MBE OStJ.
“May she rest in peace.”
