Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin was speaking after a package for ferry operators Stena Line, P & O and Seatruck was announced by the Minister for Infrastructure in partnership with DFT.
Said Ms McLaughlin: “SDLP Minister Nichola Mallon has been working with the ferry industry and counterparts across these islands for weeks to secure a bespoke package to secure our supply chains.
“Thankfully today that work has come to fruition with the delivery of a package that will support our ferry operators ensuring we have access to vital supply chains during the COVID-19 crisis.
“This package will ensure the supply of food, medicines, PPE, other critical health and vital goods can continue to come across from Great Britain to the North.
“This is fantastic news and will offer relief to many.
“I want to welcome Minister Mallon’s clear commitment that this is step one of a two pronged package, as work on support for hauliers continues.
“The SDLP has been at the front of this fight working quickly to find solutions to protect our people and our economy.
“We continue to do all that we can in the Executive and outside to support our communities and help in the fight back against COVID-19 to save lives,” added the Foyle MLA.
