The new legislation brought to the Assembly this week, will remove requirements to register, license and insure e-bikes to encourage their uptake in active means of travel.
Said the Foyle MLA: “This is welcome news and certainly something that will encourage an uptake in this environmentally friendly means of travel.
“As we emerge from this pandemic, it is clear that we must change our way of life- one that focuses not only on our own health but on the health of our planet.
“We must do things differently and I would hope consideration of alternative, active means of travel can be a small part of that change.
“In 2016 as former Environment Minister, I initiated the legislative process to change these requirements, which was subsequently hindered by the collapse of the Assembly.
“I am glad that my colleague Nichola Mallon, has been able to complete the work I started.
“It is crucial that barriers are removed to encourage all individuals to live a more active lifestyle.
“This move on e-bikes legislation, in conjunction with improving and extending greenway infrastructure which the Minister has also assured her steadfast commitment to, will bring a multitude of benefits to the North.
“E-bikes allow more people to avail of active travel including older individuals- encouraging their use in daily commutes and for recreational purposes is better for our health, better for the planet and easier on the pocket.
“By connecting communities and encouraging active travel alternatives we can help tackle the impact of climate change to create a more sustainable future.
“It is great that legislation in the North will finally be in gear with the rest of the UK. Getting more people out of cars and on their bikes will make for healthier, happier communities.”
