Coronavirus: One-way system could operate in Churches, says Bishop McKeown

Bishop Donal McKeown

THE Catholic Bishop of Derry, the Most Reverend Dr Donal McKeown, has welcomed the reopening of churches for private prayer.

The announcement was made earlier by the Stormont Executive as part of the easing of lockdown restrictions.

However, services are still not permitted because of social distancing.

Churches have been closed to worshippers since March because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Said Bishop McKeown: “Nearly half a million people go to church every Sunday in Northern Ireland, places of worship and they are a substantial minority who need to be taken into consideration.”

He said the church could under take practical measures such as having hand sanitisers, one-way systems and limiting the number of seats available.

He added: “Some churches will be visited a lot – the cathedral in Derry, there’s almost always somebody in it – but that doesn’t always mean you have to have someone standing at the door checking their passes.

“Many of our churches are covered by CCTV, in other words you can keep an eye on what’s happening from the house on CCTV.”
