The first 70 students will enrol at the Ulster University in September 2021.
SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin said: “It is excellent news that, at last, the Medical School has reportedly been given approval.
“But it is frustrating that it has taken so much effort to get it over the line.
“And we still want confirmation that it will definitely be open to accept students from September next year.
“The Executive Office must deliver.
“The SDLP has been campaigning for full sized university provision in Derry since the mid-1960s.
“This is a welcome step on the way, but it is by no means the finishing line.
“The Medical School is essential to help meet the needs of the NHS in Northern Ireland and in particular in the North West, where we have a chronic shortage of doctors.
“But there is still much more to do to ensure that we have enough undergraduate student places in Derry and the right skills to meet the needs of our evolving economy.”
DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton said: “Enhanced commitment from the Executive for the graduate medical school is very welcome.
“We have been working with all parties in Londonderry to move this issue forward and make it a reality.
“During the Confidence and Supply Agreement, Gregory Campbell was able to bring the then Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond to the City to show him the potential.
“Indeed, with support across the British Isles, this key project has been able to be moved in the right direction. It is a symbol of what can be done when people work together.
“I hope in 2021 we will be able to see the first students enrolled.
“It will be good for the North West but also for the Health Service.”
