He also called on Derry City and Strabane District Council to explore further funding options to progress the long-awaited Strathfoyle Greenway.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Investment in our greenways will be a key component in green recovery plan for the North. Today’s announcement in line with Minister Mallon’s prioritising of active travel, will no doubt be of immense value for our communities.
“One positive that can be taken from lockdown is that it has allowed many of us to recognise the important role exercise has on our mental and physical wellbeing.
“It has been great to see people walking, cycling and generally being more active within my own constituency of Foyle.
“Ring-fencing investment towards greenway infrastructure will no doubt encourage the uptake in active travel which in turn will bring a multitude of benefits for the environment and people’s overall health.
“Developing greenways which prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, will prove a huge boost for local communities.”
He added: “It now falls to Derry City and Strabane District Council to put in a funding bid for the long awaited Strathfoyle Greenway, as well as exploring additional funding resources from DAERA and the Department for Communities.
“Strathfoyle greenway will be completely transformational for the city and its surrounding areas.
“We must grab every opportunity to secure it.
“I hope this continued focus on greenway infrastructure will kick-start a cultural change in how individuals choose to incorporate active travel into their daily lives.
“In doing so, we can create greener, more sustainable societies while tackling the climate emergency head on.”
