Paul and Varena Creelman and her brother Phil Hegarty who died in Co Antrim crash

A JOINT funeral service will be held in Co Derry tomorrow, Friday, July 31, for three members of one family killed in a road crash tragedy.

The village of Kilrea is expected to come to a standstill as husband and wife Paul and Varena Creelman and her brother Phil Hegarty are laid to rest.

All three lived on Coleraine Street and were well-known and highly respected members of their local community.

They died in a two-car collision outside Portglenone, Co Antrim on Monday, July 27.

The crash, involving a silver Volkswagen Passat and a black Audi, happened on Lisnahunshin Road at around 10.40am.

All three, who were in their 60s, had been travelling in the Passat and were pronounced dead at the scene, while the male driver of the Audi was taken to hospital.

Mr and Mrs Creelman were the parents of Sean, Damien, Mikaela and Tomas and were also described as “much loved grandparents”.

Tributes have been paid the couple and Mr Hegarty following the tragedy, with many people describing their deaths as “heartbreaking and devastating”.

They have all been remembered as “genuine, lovely people” with their deaths plunging the community of Kilrea, particularly the residents of Coleraine Street, into shock and mourning.

Requiem Mass for the three family members is due to take place tomorrow in the village.

Mr Hegarty’s remains will be removed from his home at 9.30 am, while the remains of Mr and Mrs Creelman will leave their home at 11am.

The joint Requiem Mass will be held at St Mary’s Church, Drumagarner at 12 noon before interment afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Mourners who are attending the service are asked to stand along the route to pay their respects whilst maintaining social distancing in accordance with government guidelines.
