Said the Foyle MLA: “Following confirmation that a prisoner at Maghaberry has become the first inmate here to test positive for COVID-19, it is critical the Department for Justice works alongside the South Eastern Health Trust to manage and minimise Covid risk to prisoners and the staff.
“I have received assurances from Minister Long, that a rigorous regime is currently in place to identify and isolate cases to ensure that this virus does not spread to the wider prison population, and that affected individuals will be treated with dignity and respect.
“Recent months have proved to be an extremely stressful and difficult time for many families who have been unable to visit their loved ones.
“I appealed to Minister Long to review these arrangements and I’m pleased that the resumption of face-to-face visits, albeit in line with current health and safety guidelines, is underway.
“The retention of virtual visits will also be of comfort for many, particularly those with health vulnerabilities or young children who would otherwise find visits to prisons an unsettling experience.
“Seeing family at home and in a relaxed environment has been a rare but welcome opportunity for prisoners. “
Mr Durkan added: “I hope this will go some way to alleviate the anxieties and pressures on families whose loved ones are currently on remand and those within the prison system.
“I hope too that from the cloud of Covid, the silver lining we can take from this experience is the possible expansion of more inclusive visiting options going forward.”
