The substantial investment was announced earlier today by Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon.
Said the Foyle MLA said: “This is great news not just for Strathfoyle but the entire city.
“Strathfoyle Greenway will be completely transformational for Derry and its surrounding areas.
“It is a project myself and the community, have worked tirelessly to secure and progress in recent years despite facing many challenges along the way.
“This project is one I have incessantly and unashamedly raised at every opportunity with the Infrastructure Minister.
“And while the journey is not yet over, this £1.28 million cash injection will go a long way in the progression of this vital local amenity.
“This represents 50% of the projected capital, clearly the work is not over yet.
“I will now work with Council on securing the remaining funding from DAERA and the Department for Communities, as this project clearly ticks boxes in tackling rural isolation and disadvantage.”
He added: “Investment in our greenways will be a key component in the North’s green recovery plan and today’s announcement in line with Minister Mallon’s focus on active travel, will no doubt be of immense value for our communities.
“Developing active travel routes such as this one prioritises pedestrians and cyclists, encourages the uptake in active travel and will bring a multitude of benefits for the environment and people’s overall health.
“And by keeping a continued focus on green infrastructure, we can create greener, more sustainable societies while tackling the climate emergency head on.
“I look forward to the next step of this project which will see it one step closer to fruition.”
The Minister also announced £900,000 investment in the Strabane North Greenway (Derry City and Strabane District Greenway).
